According to church tradition, Orimolade was born in 1879. However, no evidence exists to support this date. According to Peel, Christianity was introduced to Akoko around 1890. Others have, however, suggested that it was somewhere between 1870 and 1883. The 1890 date was probably when the St Stephen’s Church in Ikare was built. Tradition has it that Orimolade came in formal contact with Christianity through the Rector of St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, Ikare. He was about 5 or 8 years old, according to tradition, when the unnamed rector witnessed an unusual occurrence involving Orimolade in the church. It can, therefore, be concluded that, given the traditionally acceptable age of 5 or 8 of his St Stephen’s incident, Orimolade could not have been born in 1879. Given the year Christianity was established in Ikare, Orimolade was probably born somewhere between 1882 and 1885. I posit that Orimolade was born on September 9, 1885.
The Cherubim and Seraphim Church is a Pentecostal church with the complete manifestation of the gifts of the Holy Spirit in all its ramifications. Mysteries are revealed to us by way of visions, dreams, songs, hymnals, etc. The full manifestation of the Holy Spirit is what distinguishes us from other Christian denominations. Our omniscient God is the author of time and is never wrong on the specificity of date and time of events of the past, present and future. Based on this, it will be safe to conclude that any revelation from God on date and time can be trusted.
Embedded in one of Cherubim and Seraphim hymns is a pointer to the actual date of birth of Moses Orimolade Tunolase. The hymn in question is “Baba Mimo jowo gbo gbe omo Re”. The second stanza of the hymn reads,
“Ogoji odun ni Baba fi gb’ebe
Ka le gb’egbe to logo yi dide,
Ogoji odun ni Omo fi bebe,
lati d’egbe Serafu yi sile”.
The operative word in the hymn is “Ogoji” which is forty in English. Translated to English, the hymn reads thus:
“For 40 years, God heard
the plea to raise this glorious church.
For 40 years, The Son pleaded
For the founding of the Seraphim church”
Based on the revelation in this song the birth year of Orimolade can be deduced by simply counting back 40 years from the year the Cherubim and Seraphim church was founded.
Orimolade did not set out to establish a church, he was primarily an itinerant evangelist preaching the gospel of Christ and performing miracles. When he arrived in Lagos in 1924 the preaching of the gospel remained the corner stone of his ministry. People came to him for prayers; an informal evening open-air service was established to accommodate believers. As the attendees of this service continued to grow the need to formalize the gathering arose. As a result, on September 9, 1925, at a special service, the name“SERAPHIM”, through revelation, was given to the gathering. This date was the”Spiritual Birth” of the Church. The word CHERUBIM, through revelation, was added in March 26, 1926.
If we firmly believe that our God is omniscient and the author of time, then it stands to reason that Moses Orimolade Tunolase was born exactly 40 years before the spiritual birth of the church. It can be safely concluded that he was born SEPTEMBER 9, 1885.
